JULIA LICHTENSTEIN

Julia Lichtenstein was born in Toronto and raised in Vancouver, BC. Equally enamored with science and her artistic hobbies, she began painting in her elective courses and writing a fashion blog while pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. After graduation, she moved to New York to study fashion design and marketing at Parsons School of Design, where she first picked up pottery. After a few years in the fashion industry in New York City, including internships at Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, Julia returned to Canada to pursue medicine at the University of British Columbia. Starting July 2018, she will begin her plastic surgery residency at the University of Ottawa.

“Like performing surgery in the operating room, throwing clay suspends time,” Julia said in a recent interview. “Nothing exists except simultaneous attention to form and function. Wet clay is effortless, but the material also demands discipline to harness that volatility. I relish artistries that require focus, visual-spatial appreciation, and discipline of manual dexterity.”

Julia lives in Ottawa, Ontario with her husband Jonathan and daughter Frida.
